Aajeevika Bureau is a public service organisation dedicated to providing solutions and security to India’s vulnerable migrant workers and their communities. AB offers legal aid, skilling, counselling, social security, financial services, health care and destination support to migrant workers. Through its workers’ facilitation centres, AB works in several districts of rural Rajasthan and urban destinations of Gujarat and Maharashtra. AB is now expanding to newer geographies in western India and it intend to drive new action, research, advocacy and policy work. We are seeking a highly committed, skilled and experienced development practitioner with a labour rights perspective to the position of Regional Lead for our multiple teams. The Regional Lead is a key position and the selected candidate will become part of AB’s core management and leadership team. S/he is expected to infuse a spirit of high performance in the teams and help gain new visibility and impact.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Programme Implementation, Supervision and Monitoring

  • Provide strategic and operational inputs to the field centres and teams
  • Ensure planning, execution and monitoring of initiatives;
  • Oversee, nurture and support teams in diverse locations
  • Facilitate and overview all programmatic services and activities
  • Participate in designing research, media and communication plans and ensuring high quality outputs.

 

Advocacy with state, industry and other relevant stakeholders

  • Build strategic partnerships with stakeholders across government bodies, industry, workers’ organisations and CSO community;
  • Actively engage with employers, and industry representatives to influence fair labour practices and measures;
  • Design and incubate initiatives in partnership with like-minded CSOs, Trade Unions to further migrant workers’ welfare
  • Represent AB in forums and platforms working to further workers’ welfare

 

Administration, Training and HR

  • Oversee general administration and management of all centres in Maharashtra
  • Mentor, guide, supervision, handholding and training of teams for effective implementation of programmes

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The Regional Lead must have at least a post-graduate degree or a PhD in the fields of labour studies/ development economics / development studies/social sciences /management or similar disciplines. S/he must have at least 10 years of relevant work experience including in the field of informal work, labour migration, labour rights or inclusive urban development. Work experience with informal workers and migrant communities in urban areas will be a strong asset.

The Regional Lead must possess excellent fluency in English and Hindi. Knowledge of Marathi will be a tremendous advantage. The position needs high order writing, presentation and representation skills. Solid past experience in the field and community engagement is required to support teams engaging directly with worker communities. Above all the position require a bold, outgoing individual who is familiar especially with Mumbai and Pune and comfortable to work with its migrant neighbourhoods and its working class communities.

It is a powerful tool available to all categories of waged and self-employed workers in the large sectors of construction, factories, urban services, farm work, street vending etc. ILL helps thousands of workers resolve their wage disputes and ensures that they do not lose their rightful earnings to fraud and theft.


The India Labourline is managed by Aajeevika Bureau and supported by a large response network of trade unions and civil society organisations working on labour issues across the country.

The Regional Directors of India Labourline will be part of the AB leadership team to oversee and mentor the operations the India Labourline in South and North India respectively. Who are we looking for:


We are seeking a senior colleague to fill a leadership role to manage and upscale the India Labour Line agenda. An ideal candidate will have at least a post graduate degree with training in law, labour studies, development or management with experience of 10 – 15 years in a relevant organisational environment. The applicants must be interested and passionate about workers’ rights, legal protection and social justice. Individuals with experience of managing and guiding large and multi-locational field teams are likely to fare well in this role.


The role requires a strong people orientation, administrative experience and a proven ability to nurture teams. Strong communication skills including the ability to write, document and publish is essential. Similarly, the role will require managing donor relationships and fulfilling reporting requirements. A good grasp and comfort with data and technology is essential for this role.


The two positions are based in Delhi and Bangalore respectively but considerable travel to network and liaise with state teams will be needed. Professional connections and past / current experience of work in these geographies would be a big plus.

Aajeevika Bureau (AB), headquartered in Udaipur, is a non-profit trust registered in 2005 with a vision to secure, dignified lives of communities dependent on labour and migration (www.aajeevika.org). AB operates through a network of facilitation centres and offers services and solutions to seasonal migrant workers and their families. These centres are based at the source (in Rajasthan) and destination (in Gujarat and Maharashtra).


AB’s work aims to empower women in migration affected communities to help them overcome the pressures arising from informal, low waged work. Women’s labour remains invisible and unpaid exposing them to various vulnerabilities. AB promotes and nurtures solidarity groups of rural women called ‘Ujala Samooh’ who then advocate for their rights’ and entitlements from local administration. These groups are organized into apex structures at block and panchayat levels. With over 13000 women in Ujala Samoohs across south Rajasthan, AB’s strategy includes developing a cadre of strong peer leaders and volunteers who extend linkages to basic social protection, access to regular work under NREGA, access to pensions and subsidized ration and support local planning at panchayat level.


The current position involves working closely with women in the community and is reserved for women candidates only. Dalit /Adivasi /OBC / minority candidates are encouraged to apply.


Key Responsibilities

As a central member of the team, the candidate would be responsible for central programme functions such as:

  • Planning and conceptualizing new areas of work integrating a feminist perspective
  • Team support with frequent travel to field locations across Udaipur and neighbouring Dungarpur and Banswara districts.
  • Undertaking research and writing to assimilate knowledge
  • Networking and coordinating with external groups and partners to deepen program impact
  • Review and strengthen the structure of the Ujala Samooh and Federation
  • Designing and implementing tools to map progress and outcomes, in addition to regular data management
  • Manage all reporting requirements and develop proposals as needed.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Post-graduate in a relevant field of study (such as gender studies / social work / development studies) is preferred.
  • 1-2 years of grassroots work experience in non-profit settings. Prior experience of working with community institutions (of women/adolescent girls) will be an advantage.
  • Strong feminist understanding of marginalized girls and women situated within developmental issues of migration and labour.
  • Programme management skills and ability to offer thought leadership to teams.
  • Strong writing skills.

The India Labourline is a phone based service to provide information, counselling, distress support and emergency response to informal workers throughout India. It is a powerful tool available to all categories of waged and self-employed workers in the large sectors of construction, factories, urban services, farm work, street vending etc. ILL helps thousands of workers resolve their wage disputes and ensures that they do not lose their rightful earnings to fraud and theft.


The India Labourline is managed by Aajeevika Bureau and supported by a large response network of trade unions and civil society organisations working on labour issues across the country


The Regional Coordinator (North) will be part of the India Labour Line’s leadership team to oversee and mentor the operations of the India Labourline in North India. They will provide the conceptual and operational leadership to the India Labourline as it becomes a national movement across multiple states and cities.


The specific roles associated with the post of Regional Coordinator are as follows:

  • Management and administration of the India Labour Line operations including implementation of its expansion plans.
  • Supporting the central operations of the India Labour Line. Quality control and monitoring of data and information coming to the helpline.
  • Managing and Tracking the MIS data and ensuring quick resolution of cases registered. Tracking and oversight of critical cases for speedy resolution
  • Support the field teams to ensure that the Standard Operating Procedure for case resolution is being followed.
  • Guiding and mentoring ILL’s field teams held by various CSOs across regions
  • Networking and liaison with labour organisers, CSOs and lawyers in order to assure swift responses to distressed workers calling in from various part of the country.

Who are we looking for?


We are seeking a senior colleague to fill a leadership role to manage and upscale the India Labour Line agenda. An ideal candidate will:

  • Hold a Post Graduate degree with training in law, labour studies, social work, development, management or related field. People with Graduate degree but significant experience & knowledge in the area of labour & migration will be considered.
  • 5 to 10 years of work experience in the development sector, with preferably at least 2 to 3 years experience on the issue of labour, migration or legal aid.
  • The applicants must be interested and passionate about workers’ rights, legal protection and social justice.
  • Individuals with experience of managing and guiding large and multi-location field teams are likely to fare well in this role.
  • The role requires a strong people orientation, administrative experience and a proven ability to nurture teams.
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to write good quality reports is essential. The role will require fulfilling donor reporting requirements.
  • A good grasp and comfort with data and technology is essential for this role.

Location & Travel: The position is based in Delhi but considerable travel to network and liaise with state teams will be needed. Professional connections and past / current experience of work in these geographies would be a big plus.

The Worker Facilitation Centre (WFC) in the industrial area of Dahej in Bharuch is a significant intervention being set up under Social Compact initiative. The function of the centre will be to act as a space for workers to walk-in for information, counselling and access to government schemes and benefits. The WFC seeks to provide targeted services to workers in the realms of financial inclusion, social security, health and legal aid. It specifically seeks to benefit migrant workers who are employed in Dahej industried in informal or hazardous jobs.


We are seeking an experienced colleague to lead the work in Dahej industrial area.


Roles & Responsibilities


The Coordinator (Worker Facilitation Centre) will be responsible for design and implementation of outreach and service delivery to migrant workers in Dahej industrial clusters Specific roles and responsibilities are as follows:

  • Lead outreach regarding various services provided by the WFC among migrant workers employed in the industrial clusters in Dahej and surrounding areas Building rapport with various worker groups through regular visits and follow-ups.
  • Liason extensively with local governments and important stakeholders from the industries to help advance the defined outcomes of the Compact
  • Organize regular meetings and workshops for workers regarding various social security schemes and entitlements, financial literacy, primary and occupational health, legal awareness and other issues related to enhancing the dignity and welfare of workers.
  • Design systems to regularly document and showcase the impact of the initiative.
  • Designing and implementing mass publicity events, campaigns and tools around the functions and services of the Worker Facilitation Centre and ensuring walk-ins, enrolments, linkages and facilitation of benefits.
  • Lead coordination and report writing for funders.

Desired Skills & Experience


  • Graduate/Post-Graduate with and educational background in labour studies/social work/ development studies/social sciences or similar disciplines would be preferable.
  • At least 5 years of work experience. Experience in labour welfare and labour rights is highly preferred.
  • Sound knowledge of Gujarati and Hindi, along with basic knowledge of computers and ability for documentation is essential. Working knowledge of English is required.

The position demands a willingness and interest to work in the community and engage with workers. Work hours and the field movement can be demanding and the candidate will need to be prepared for field work.


The salary offer for this position can range from Rs. 30,000 – Rs. 40,000 per month depending on qualification and relevant experience
