Jaipur is the largest city in Rajasthan and is both the state and tourism capital. This commercial hub has fueled an increasing demand for labour, especially in the informal sector. For this reason, Jaipur has drawn large concentrations of migrants from rural villages all over Rajasthan. Mainly the Jaipur migrants reach here from the neighbouring districts. Some of the major occupations migrants work in include: hotel/restaurant, construction, head-loading, vendors /dhabas, printers, and rickshaw pullers. As the capital of the state it is also well situated for state level expansion, advocacy and legislative action to support migrants.
The Aajeevika centre in Jaipur has started to work on many fronts of problems and solutions faced by migrant workers in this large urban setting. Its initial work has reached large groups of headloaders and construction workers. The Jaipur office is the main venue for policy advocacy and expansion of services to other parts of the state. Along with this advocacy, the centre works on organizing trade based collectives that look after the interests of those entering the market in their sectors. The centre also actively provides registration and photo ID service to those migrants that lack any form of identity.
